This season brings happiness and warmth into many households, yet, this time of year comes with it’s own challenges. I would like to highlight a couple of these challenges and how best to deal with these.
Extra load
I don’t know about you but my stress levels always rise this time of year? Between extra social events, ordering presents, writing out Christmas cards, and booking travel, my to-do list has multiplied. Then there’s the additional food shopping, decorating, hosting when guests arrive, and tidying up afterwards. Don’t get me wrong, I love this time of year but what have I learnt from previous years?
- Don’t be afraid to ask for help, our capacity has a limit, delegation is key.
- Have a written to-do list and prioritise tasks, use your time wisely.
- Do not forget to have your own down-time, more than ever we need to keep our batteries charged during this period.
Visiting family
Be mindful of the family dynamics that are playing out. Many of us use this holiday to visit family members and spend time with our loved ones.
- Just be aware of any family members that might trigger you and what those triggers usually are. Recognition of these dynamics and triggers will automatically help you in that situation.
- Understand that you can’t change their behaviour, but you can change your reaction to that said behaviour. Know that deep down, you are still you, regardless of their actions or words.
A gentle reminder to be present and try not to spend your time thinking about the past or the future. We can only be in the moment we’re in now, so let’s concentrate our energy there.
Wishing you a stress-free lead up to Christmas,
Rachel.
